Scams Are Smarter Now -Thanks to AI

1 in 4 adults have experienced an AI voice scam, with 1 in 10 having been personally targeted.

77% of victims who engaged with an AI-enabled scam call lost money.

The average financial loss for senior victims: $1,298 per incident.

But that’s just voice cloning. The AI fraud landscape is far more sophisticated.

The AI fraud toolkit: how scammers weaponize technology

Result: Audio that sounds exactly like the victim, complete with emotional urgency, pauses, and breaths.

Where Scammers Get Voice Samples

To build voice clones, scammers act as digital harvesters:

  • Social Media Stories & Reels (TikTok, Instagram – primary source)
  • YouTube videos
  • LinkedIn video posts
  • Podcast appearances
  • Voicemail greetings
  • Corporate presentations
  • Zoom call recordings
  • News interviews

They don’t need studio quality. Just 3 seconds of clean audio.

The Impact

Voice cloning fraud rose by 680% in one year.

A 2024 McAfee study found that 1 in 4 adults have experienced an AI voice scam.

The Virtual Kidnapping Evolution:

By 2026, “grandparent scams” have evolved into highly targeted operations:

  • Scammers scour social media for “proof of life” details (recent vacation photo, pet’s name, check-in location)
  • Phone rings, often spoofing loved one’s actual number
  • You hear their voice—panicked, crying, screaming
  • Script: “Mom, I’ve been in a wreck” or “Dad, I’m in jail, please help”
  • AI clone creates immediate adrenal spike, bypassing logical brain

A chilling 2025 FBI warning highlighted cases where scammers used AI to simulate kidnapping, demanding ransoms ranging from $2,500 to $15,000.

2. Deepfake Video: “Seeing Is No Longer Believing”

The $25 Million Video Call

In February 2024, a finance worker at engineering firm Arup was tricked into wiring $25 million during what appeared to be a routine video conference call.

What happened:

The employee received a message from the company’s CFO (UK-based) requesting a confidential fund transfer.

To verify, they suggested a video call.

On the call:

  • The CFO appeared on screen
  • Multiple other executives joined
  • Everyone looked right
  • Everyone sounded right
  • Facial movements synchronized
  • Voices matched speech patterns
  • Body language natural

The employee authorized 15 transactions totaling $25 million to Hong Kong bank accounts.

Every person on that call—except the victim—was an AI-generated deepfake.

The incident wasn’t discovered for weeks.

The Singapore Case

In March 2025, a multinational firm in Singapore fell victim to a similar attack.

A finance director received contact from the company CFO requesting an urgent wire transfer for a confidential acquisition ($499,000).

The attackers had learned from previous cases:

  • They knew finance professionals had heard about deepfake threats
  • They knew victims would verify unusual requests

So they proactively suggested a video call.

This apparent willingness to verify through video created false confidence.

The Zoom call included multiple senior executives.

These weren’t simple photo cutouts or static images. The deepfakes featured synchronized facial movements, realistic voices that matched each executive’s known speech patterns, and natural body language.

The technology had advanced to the point where real-time interaction appeared genuine.

The WPP CEO Clone

According to The Guardian, the CEO of WPP was targeted by scammers who cloned his voice and used it on a fake Teams-style call.

The voice sounded authentic and instructed staff to share sensitive access credentials and transfer funds under a plausible pretext.

While this case stopped short of major financial loss, it highlights how attackers are blending AI audio and video with traditional BEC tactics.

Third: Have you coordinated response sequencing with legal, cybersecurity, and investor relations?
