The funeral was on a Tuesday, but Edward didn’t attend.

Instead, he sat in his laboratory at Cambridge, the same laboratory where he’d discovered the cellular mechanism that would eventually cure cancer, the same laboratory where Bella used to bring him coffee at midnight and kiss his forehead and tell him to come home and stared at his wife’s last MRI scan.

Her brain, mapped in exquisite detail just six months ago during a routine physical. Every neural pathway. Every synapse. Every electrical pattern that had made her, her. The data was still there, preserved in the hospital’s digital archives. The architecture of Bella’s consciousness, waiting.

Walter stood in his new office on the 47th floor of the Berkshire Tower, looking out at the city that had once looked down on him.

CEO. Chief Executive Officer. The nameplate was already on the door: WALTER GRANT.

He’d made it. Thirty-eight years old, youngest CEO in the company’s 112-year history. The board had announced it this morning. The press release was already circulating. His phone had been buzzing nonstop with congratulations.

He should feel triumphant.

The Road to Nowhere

Cissy stopped counting after that.

The road stretched ahead of her, perfectly straight, cutting through a landscape that never quite changed. Desert to her left, always. Mountains to her right, distant and purple and never any closer no matter how long she walked. The sky was perpetually sunset, not moving toward night, not retreating to day, just caught in that golden-pink liminal space between.
